“Armenian wines are to be savored”

Yerevan Wine Days 2019 will be held on Saryan St. on May 3-4, kicking off at 17:00 and closing at 23:00. Organized by Eventtoura, the third edition of this annual event will feature winemakers from Armenia and Artsakh presenting around 200 varieties and restaurants and cafes offering special dishes from Armenian and foreign cuisine.

The Vine and Wine Foundation of Armenia is also participating in Yerevan Wine Days. It will hold workshops for the guests, teaching them how to assess the wine, determine if it is good, develop a more professional approach to wine selection and choose the right wines for different dishes.

“Food and wine are very important. Unfortunately, there are so many gaps to fill in this area! We are going to publish the first ever book about possible combinations for Armenian wines and dishes to explain which wine will go well with which dish,” head of the foundation Zaruhi Muradyan told GastroVino.

According to her, Yerevan Wine Days are important in terms of increasing the recognition of Armenian wines both within the country and abroad. The event is already well-known: many tourists come to Armenia in early May to taste wines.

The comparison between Armenian and Georgian wines favors the former, according to Muradyan. She has told GastroVino that experts who have knowledge about Caucasian wines and tried both the Georgian and Armenian varieties agree: the latter has higher quality. However, Armenia is losing the comparison in the political sense. Georgia also holds wine days and considers winemaking a strategic area of the national brand. The state invests USD 5 million annually into marketing Georgian wines.

“Nevertheless, we have some recognition too and the state supports us. I don’t want to keep comparing us to Georgia, because we can’t supply plenty of cheap wines to the world. Our wines are expensive and of high quality. Armenian wines are to be savored. We have a place in the global market and I hope we’ll see progress in this sector in a few years,” said Zaruhi Muradyan.
