Armenia to have a virus-free database of local grape varieties

Vine and Wine Foundation of Armenia and Armenian National Agrarian University have signed a memorandum, under which they will jointly implement a number of viniculture and winemaking projects.

The foundation has announced that in the scope of cooperation, the sides will launch “Virus-free database of local varieties” project, which is aimed at discovering and studying local Armenian varieties of grape and the viruses that negatively affect the vaccine. Afterwards, the project team will use the “in vitro” method to breed the virus-free seedlings of wine and table Armenian grapes.

“This project will lay the foundation for production of virus-free seedlings of wine grapes and preservation of the diversity of their genetic resources,” the foundation said in a statement.

The cooperation will also include enhancement of the capacities of the university’s Agrobiotechnology Scientific Center as well as re-equipment of the center’s adaptation room, where the virus-free plants are to be bred.
